Castrati were a unique phenomenon in Western musical history, lasting from the late 16th c. to the mid-19th century. The practice of castrating young boys and training them for singing was never approved by the Church but authorities turned a blind eye; only the conquest of the Papal States by Italy in 1870 put an end to the practice. Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) entered the Sistine Chapel in 1883 and became conductor of the Choir in 1898. He is the only castrato to have ever been recorded; he retired in 1913.

I Musici cantori erano consci, ben consci della loro popolarità, e a parte qualche eccezione, dominavano i compositori coi loro capricci nei casi più assurdi, o imponevano le loro pretese. Venivano strapagati e più del compositore stesso....

Le voci dei castrati erano assolutamente le principali, le più ricercate e anche le più pagate, dell'epoca Barocca, a cui seguivano a ruota quelle dei soprani; ma la fama e la gloria erano sopratutto per i castrati, poiché la loro voce era uno strumento musicale potentissimo che racchiudeva in sé le caratteristiche delle voci maschili, femminili e bianche, il tutto amplificato da una poderosa cassa toracica, sviluppatasi come effetto della castrazione, che permetteva fiati lunghissimi e messe di voce incredibili.
L'Abate François Raguenet testimonia:

Sono ugole e suoni di voci da usignoli; sono fiati che fanno mancare la terra sotto i piedi e che quasi tolgono il respiro.

> Per quanto riguarda poi la tonalità, pare che questa dipendesse dall'età in cui veniva praticata l'evirazione: prima avveniva e prima aumentava la possibilità di ottenere un buon soprano (termine che a volte indicava castrato soprano, e non per soprano femminile), se si aspettava un po' di più maggiori erano le probabilità che la voce ottenuta fosse più verso la sfera contraltista.

Debuttò a Napoli a quindici anni, e in seguito interpretò i migliori ruoli di soprano nelle opere, non solo in patria ma anche a Londra, Vienna e Madrid. Nella capitale della Spagna, divenne il favorito di Filippo V, che arrivò a risultargli imprescindibile che Farinelli non gli cantasse per le notti per potere conciliare il sonno. Rimase a Madrid più di venti anni e dopo continuò la sua corsa trionfale in diverse città.
Il suo carattere affabile ed equilibrato, cosa rara nel mondo dei divi, gli procurò quasi tante amicizie ed ammiratori come le sue portentose condizioni vocali. Negli ultimi anni, benché avesse acquisito gran fortuna, insegnava canto per chi considerava che lo meritasse. Morì a Bologna a settantasette anni.

un'idea di bellezza canora durata oltre tre Secoli dalla seconda metà del Cinquecento , inizio della Controriforma, agli inizi del Novecento quando Alessandro Moreschi - the "last castrato " come lo battezzarono i pioneristici discografici inglesi venuti a registrarne la voce - era ancora attivo nella Cappella Sistina. Non fu veramente l'ultimo, abbiamo testimonianze di anziani evirati vivi fino ai Sessanta, ma dal 1903 un motu proprio Vaticano decise che non si potevano più accogliere bambini castrati per addestrarli alla professione di cantante.

Pare chiaro che la voce dei castrati *era molto differente da quella delle donne: altro motivo per cui oggi, se vogliamo ricercare un "alienum", un qualcosa di differente per interpretare i ruoli dei personaggi affidati un tempo ai castrati, non si può pensare d'impiegare una voce femminile.

Nei secoli scorsi quindi si castravano bambini per mantenerne la "voce bianca" e così ottenere quei soprani "speciali" tanto apprezzati, ma la mutilazione  sottocitata - ...un - creduto! - e ampiamente sbandierato successo del COMPORTAMENTISMO è ancora più raccapricciante nella sua quasi "banalità" di situazione "privata"ed esemplifica bene teoria, impostazione e principi del Comportamentismo stesso.
